This artform combines traditional pueblo designs with modern color and carving techniques. Beginning with a moulded ceramic pot, the artist paints it with the colors of the earth, sky, water and sunset. Then, using hand tools, the artist carves intricate designs representing feathers, the Great Spirit, stages of life and sometimes animals. Because every piece is hand painted and carved, each represents a unique work of art.

by Navajo artist Thomas Vail
One of the most unique forms of pottery, horse hair pottery combines not only the skill of the artist but also the unpredictable forces of nature. Starting with a moulded ceramic pot, vase or animal shape, the artist penetrates the pot with carbon from burning horse hair. The horse hair is applied by hand. As the hair is consumed by the fire, it twists and turns, producing a unique pattern never to be duplicated again.
